Hasta donde se sabe, no existe una fotografía de Rosa Duarte, hermana del Padre de la Patria dominicana, Juan Pablo Duarte. Las imágenes que se muestran de ella son idealizaciones de artistas plásticos como Miguel Núñez, Cristian Hernández, Orestes Toribio, Ramón Sandoval y Juan Gilberto Núñez, basadas en una fotografía no autentificada ni por descendientes de los Duarte ni por historiadores. A esas idealizaciones se suma ahora una de Dustin Muñoz, pintor extraordinario, cuyo retrato de Rosa Duarte ha sido seleccionado por el Instituto Duartiano y el Instituto Postal Dominicano para un sello conmemorativo del bicentenario de esta heroína recién exaltada al Panteón de la Patria. Para realizar esta obra, Dustin ha tomado como referencia las fotografías de los hermanos de Rosa: Juan Pablo, Vicente Celestino y Manuel; y de la nieta de Vicente, Matilde; logrando una imagen que tiene, indudablemente, el aire de los Duarte, y que tal vez represente el mejor acercamiento visual a esta mujer excepcional. Dustin Muñoz manifiesta: “La he representado con la edad que ella tenía al momento de la independencia, poco menos de 24 años. Es una obra simbólica, ambientada con elementos de diferentes épocas que permiten a los espectadores identificar de forma inmediata que están delante del retrato de una figura de la historia de la patria”. La interpretación que ha hecho Dustin Muñoz de Rosa Duarte difiere de las de sus colegas no solo en las características físicas sino también en la intención simbólica. Durante la conversación con el artista, mientras los demás retratos la muestran posando contra un fondo neutro, el de Dustin la presenta en un ambiente alusivo a su labor como revolucionaria y como cronista de primera línea de la vida y obra de su heroico hermano, a través de sus imprescindibles Apuntes para la historia de Santo Domingo y para la biografía del General dominicano Juan Pablo Duarte y Diez.

Dustin Muñoz tiene una dilatada carrera artística y su sitial como uno de los mejores exponentes de las artes plásticas en República Dominicana.

Dustin Muñoz: “Opté por contextualizar a Rosa en el ambiente independentista de la noche del 27 de febrero que da origen a la patria: una mezcla de suceso y reminiscencia, de acto y consecuencias de lo acontecido aquella noche. Obviamente, como símbolo patrio no podía faltar la enseña tricolor. Motivado por los aportes de Rosa a la gesta independentista y a la historia, decidí ambientar el espacio pictórico con elementos que forman parte del escudo nacional. Por eso se observa en el fondo de la composición la rama de palma, el laurel, las cuatro banderas sin escudo y las dos lanzas. Además, en el atuendo lleva Rosa la cruz del escudo nacional y sobre las piernas reposa la bandera dominicana que acoge una biblia abierta, conteniendo dentro de ella los Apuntes manuscritos y algunas cartas, sujetados con un cintillo tricolor por el valor patriótico que representan”.

La pieza está realizada en acrílica sobre tela y tiene un formato de 44 x 33 pulgadas, el cual permite que la figura retratada tenga un tamaño natural que le aporta realismo. “Por el lugar donde será colocada la obra en el Instituto Duartiano, y para guardar armonía con las demás piezas allí expuestas —donde Juan Pablo Duarte es la figura central—, elegí unas gamas de suaves matices que, aunque se trata de una obra politonal y de un colorido diverso, están armonizadas con capas de veladuras de tendencia sepia. Esto, por un lado, le otorga tiempo a la obra, le da distancia temporal; y, por otro lado, complementa con el carácter psicológico que envuelve a la figura representada”.

¿Qué significa para ti hacer un retrato de Rosa Duarte en el bicentenario de su nacimiento? DM: “Realizar esta obra es volver a la historia jugando un rol de responsabilidad ciudadana. Es valorar en su justa dimensión a nuestros héroes y heroínas, identificar sus aportes, su entrega abnegada y sus sacrificios. En el caso que nos ocupa, no es pintar a una mujer y ya; es estudiarla, analizar su entorno, ponerme en su lugar y tratar de comprender los sentimientos del personaje y su estado psicológico”.

¿Cómo debemos ver y sentir tu retrato de Rosa Duarte? DM: “Como estructura compositiva, he procurado que la retratada interpele al espectador con su mirada penetrante y que al mismo tiempo deje sentir su estado anímico. En ese sentido, su rostro es el centro de interés de la composición. Espero que quien observe la obra reconozca que tenemos una deuda infinita con la familia Duarte, y que Rosa, pudiendo optar por una vida más acomodada, prefirió el sacrificio y el destierro —por esa razón presentó en la obra la delicadeza de su postura y la calidad de su indumentaria—”. No hay una imagen original de Rosa Duarte, pero su iconografía va creciendo y empieza a marcar hitos, como este maravilloso retrato de Dustin Muñoz.

“Realizar esta obra es volver a la historia jugando un rol de responsabilidad ciudadana. Es valorar en su justa dimensión a nuestros héroes y heroínas, identificar sus aportes, su entrega abnegada y sus sacrificios”, valora Dustin Muñoz. Esto representa, quizás, una evidencia de la revalorización de sus aportes patrióticos, del interés por conocer su sacrificio y valentía, de la necesidad de destacar sus cualidades como mujer y ciudadana, que en este bicentenario de su nacimiento la han colocado en un lugar a la altura de su dignidad. The artist Dustin Muñoz gives a young Rosa Duarte committed to her homeland

As far as is known, there is no photograph of Rosa Duarte, sister of the Dominican Father of the Nation, Juan Pablo Duarte.

The images shown of her are idealizations by visual artists such as Miguel Núñez, Cristian Hernández, Orestes Toribio, Ramón Sandoval and Juan Gilberto Núñez, based on a photograph not authenticated by descendants of the Duarte family or by historians.

To these idealizations is now added one by Dustin Muñoz, an extraordinary painter, whose portrait of Rosa Duarte has been selected by the Duartiano Institute and the Dominican Postal Institute for a stamp commemorating the bicentennial of this heroine recently exalted to the Pantheon of the Homeland.

To carry out this work, Dustin has taken as a reference the photographs of Rosa's brothers: Juan Pablo, Vicente Celestino and Manuel; and Vicente's granddaughter, Matilde; achieving an image that has, undoubtedly, the air of the Duarte, and that perhaps represents the best visual approach to this exceptional woman.

Dustin Muñoz states: “I have represented her at the age she was at the time of independence, just under 24 years old. It is a symbolic work, set with elements from different times that allow viewers to immediately identify that they are in front of a portrait of a figure in the history of the country ”.

The interpretation that Dustin Muñoz has made of Rosa Duarte differs from those of her colleagues not only in physical characteristics but also in symbolic intention.

During the conversation with the artist, while the other portraits show her posing against a neutral background, that of Dustin presents her in an atmosphere allusive to her work as a revolutionary and as a front-line chronicler of the life and work of her heroic brother. through his essential Notes for the history of Santo Domingo and for the biography of the Dominican General Juan Pablo Duarte y Diez.

Dustín Muñoz has a long artistic career and his place as one of the best exponents of the plastic arts in the Dominican Republic.

DM: “I chose to contextualize Rosa in the independence atmosphere of the night of February 27 that gave rise to the homeland: a mixture of event and reminiscence, of act and consequences of what happened that night. Obviously, as a national symbol, the tricolor ensign could not be absent. Motivated by Rosa's contributions to the independence struggle and to history, I decided to set the pictorial space with elements that are part of the national shield. That is why the palm branch, the laurel, the four flags without shields and the two lances can be seen in the background of the composition. In addition, Rosa is wearing the national coat of arms in her outfit and the Dominican flag rests on her legs, which houses an open bible, containing within it the handwritten Notes and some letters, held with a tricolor headband for the patriotic value they represent ”.

The piece is made of acrylic on canvas and has a format of 44 x 33 inches, which allows the portrayed figure to have a natural size that gives it realism. “Because of the place where the work will be placed in the Duartiano Institute, and to keep harmony with the other pieces exhibited there —where Juan Pablo Duarte is the central figure—, I chose a range of soft nuances that, although it is a polygonal work and of a diverse color, they are harmonized with layers of sepia-trend glazes. This, on the one hand, gives time to the work, gives it temporary distance; and, on the other hand, it complements the psychological character that surrounds the represented figure ”.

What does it mean for you to make a portrait of Rosa Duarte on the bicentennial of his birth?

DM: “To carry out this work is to go back to history playing a role of civic responsibility. It is to value our heroes and heroines in their proper dimension, to identify their contributions, their selfless dedication and their sacrifices. In the case that concerns us, it is not painting a woman and that's it; it is studying her, analyzing her environment, putting myself in her place and trying to understand the character's feelings and her psychological state ”.

How should we see and feel your portrait of Rosa Duarte?

DM: “As a compositional structure, I have tried to make the person portrayed challenge the viewer with her penetrating gaze and at the same time let her feel her state of mind. In that sense, her face is the center of interest of the composition. I hope that whoever observes the work will recognize that we owe an infinite debt to the Duarte family, and that Rosa, being able to choose a more affluent life, preferred sacrifice and exile — for that reason I present in the work the delicacy of her posture and the quality of their clothing— ”.

There is no original image of Rosa Duarte, but her iconography grows and begins to mark milestones, like this wonderful portrait of Dustin Muñoz.
